What each status actually means

Not every non-self-referencing canonical is wrong. Context matters — here's how to read each result.

✅ SELF — usually correct
The canonical points to the current page's own URL. This is the expected, healthy default for the vast majority of pages — it confirms this page is the preferred version of itself.
⚠️ DIFF — verify intent
The canonical points elsewhere. Sometimes correct (a print view, a tracking-parameter URL, a paginated page pointing to page 1) — but often a misconfiguration worth investigating, especially on a primary landing page.
❓ MISSING — check defaults
No canonical tag was found. Search engines will typically treat the page as self-canonical by default, but explicit declaration is recommended, especially on sites with URL parameters or duplicate content risk.
🔁 MULTIPLE — fix this
More than one canonical tag is almost never intentional. This commonly happens when a CMS or plugin adds its own canonical on top of a manually inserted one. Should be resolved to a single declaration.

A canonical tag is an HTML element — <link rel="canonical" href="..."> — that tells search engines which URL is the preferred, authoritative version of a page when duplicate or near-duplicate content exists at multiple URLs. It helps consolidate ranking signals to a single URL instead of splitting them across several near-identical pages.
What does it mean if a canonical points to a different URL? +
It means the page is telling search engines that a different URL should be treated as the primary version, and this page itself shouldn't compete for ranking independently.
